Civil engineering is widely reported to be experiencing an endemic skills shortage, that requires a concerted effort to drive interest in careers within the industry.
That is why it is important that as civil engineers we support the industry by inspiring and supporting the next generation of engineers.
At Andun we do this in two ways by supporting our local engineering and STEM communities and by developing young engineers through summer and year long university placements.
STEM Events
We encourage our offices across the UK to support their local engineering and STEM communities as part of their own personal and professional development.
Examples of these type of events would include our MD, Angus Holdsworth, going into primary schools to raise awareness and build interest in engineering as a career choice through fun engineering challenges.
It would also include Director Joshua Martin being a STEM ambassador and taking part in delivering engineering workshops Cheshire College – South & West
Recently the college opened its doors to year 10 and 11 learners looking to get a taste of several courses which include Civil Engineering. It was great to see young people learning 3D CAD and the RIBA plan of work stages. All eyes were glued to the screen when Josh showcased dynamic demolition at its finest.
Summer Placements and Industry Events
One of the ways we support and develop engineers is by providing them with on-the-job training and experience as part of their degree course.
This can take the form of summer placements or a full-year placement where prospective engineers join the team and get real-world temporary works design and civil engineering experience.
The proof that these schemes work is that our director Josh, joined the company as part of one of these schemes.
Temporary Works Webinars & Industry Organisation Talks
Andun also look to support the engineering community and promote the importance of temporary works within the construction industry.
A key way of doing this is through our Temporary Works webinars which started during the pandemic and are now held monthly, covering a wide range of topics.
Team members regularly speak at events for industry organisations such as ICE and the TWf.
